Photos from places I’ve written about: Belgrade, Serbia; Lake Louise, Alberta; Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania; and Florence, Italy.
What do you do with a degree in creative writing and geography?
This, apparently!
I’m Anna, a freelance writer based in upstate New York. I’ve written for The New York Times, National Geographic, Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, and Lonely Planet, among other national and international publications you can read here.
I started my career writing about Italy, as I’ve spent prolonged periods in Florence, Rome, and Palermo, Sicily. I actually moved to Sicily in 2019 for what was supposed to be a two-year stint (one year under a postgraduate fellowship through Dartmouth College, my alma mater, and another as a teaching assistant). After the pandemic hit, my time in Italy left with a lifelong penchant for arancine—and a host of stories that unfold throughout my writing portfolio.
Now, I cover a broad scope of travel stories. My articles have dug into the ecological ramifications of cave tourism in Belize; the scientific explanation for why Calgary’s Olympic ice is faster than others; and how the next generation of Sicilian puppeteers is modernizing tradition.
Beyond travel, I cover stories about sustainability, gastronomy, and urban development—topics that intersect more often than not.
